Bonus Pictures!

Tiana & I spent a long time together.  When her lodging plans fell through at the last minute, I offered her my guest room (we were both influenced by great recommendations from our mutual friend, Betcee May).  Tiana arrived on a Thursday evening.  On Friday morning, I took her on a walking tour of the downtown neighborhoods, and we wandered back to my house for our "official" photography sitting.  We then went out to dinner, hung out, and turned in early.  On Saturday morning, we did a little more photography (see Tiana In The Morning), checked out the farmer's market, and in the afternoon, she took off for her second sitting in town.  With Tiana's permission, we made snapshots throughout.  "I'm very comfortable having my picture taken," she said, and I took advantage of that.

Bonus #1 -- More Clothes; Less Serious

Tiana & I make arrangements to meet at Pioneer Square, a block in downtown that is also a stop on the light rail from the airport.  I describe what I look like.  She, in turn, describes herself:  "I look like my pictures, except more clothes & less serious".  That's positively poetic!  What follows here are some of the snapshots Tiana & I made together while we wandered about town.

I was most impressed by Tiana's diet.  I eat crap all day, she eats healthy all day, and our respective bodies show it.  In fact, Tiana eats like a woodland creature during the day, eating mostly fruit & nuts.  Well, she also needs her designer coffee drink first think in the morning, too.  But you can't argue with what she eats, especially when you stand her next to me.

This was Friday morning, before we made our real exposures.  That evening, after we were done photographing, we went around the corner for some terrific organic Japanese bento boxes.

I love walking around downtown for exercise -- I could walk five miles a day without a problem.  As it turns out, Tiana had no problem keeping up with me.  Portland is at the juncture of two big rivers, the Willamette (this river) and the Columbia.  "Downtown" is right behind where I am standing.

Riding the street car with Tiana.  In downtown, the street car is fare free -- it's Portland's way of trying to keep cars out of downtown.  So, after our walk, we head back to my house for our photography session.

It's amusing to me -- I'm a people watcher, and I see lots of people of all shapes & sizes & ages as I wander about town.  But unlike other people watchers, I often wonder what the people I am watching would look like without their clothing.

Someday, you might see an attractive young woman like this on the light rail or on the bus -- next time, when you do, think about seeing her nude.  That's part of what being a photographer of the nude is about for me.

Saturday morning, the day after our photography sitting.  Tiana has her tasty coffee drink, so she's happy, and she is having a terrific time grazing through the Saturday farmer's market, downtown, maybe a 10 minute walk from my house, in a large city park.

Tiana is in heaven, stocking up on berries (Oregon has great berries), fruit, and nuts.

Saying goodbye to Tiana.  This is early Saturday afternoon.  Tiana is all packed and awaiting the street car, expecting to find her way to her second Portland photographer.  Traveling models have to compromise -- they have to travel light, because one trip might require stops in a half-dozen diverse cities, and they have to travel light, but they also have to bring along some wardrobe & accessories & makeup.

Tiana is experienced and has these trips down pat.  In fact, she flies west from her hometown, and then she takes small hops as she works her way back east -- that's easier on her jet lag.  Smart.

Bonus #2 -- The Dining Room

After Tiana & I completed the set by my favorite window, we briefly tried to make some images using the window light in the dining room. I didn't like these images as we were making them, so I didn't try too hard to make them work.

I do believe that my "failures" are much more educational than my "successes", so I thought I'd share these with you.

Well, first off, my exposure is 'way off -- these images were so overexposed that I could not "save" them with photo editing.  I also don't like how this light hits Tiana's lovely face.

I've worked here before on occasion, and I now realize that the best light is when the model & I are both sitting on the floor -- if we had, the light would have come from above & the side, which probably would have been a more flattering lighting.

There's something I don't talk about much:  these photo sittings can be very tiring for me.  I don't know why -- it's not like I'm jogging or running around or lifting a lot of weight, but I do have to admit that my brain is like a three ring circus:  part is thinking about the technical details, part is communicating with the model in a meaningful way, part is carrying on a conversation (because I like photographing models when their brains are working), part is keeping track of the time, part is planning ahead, and so forth.  After a while (usually after 2.5 - 3 hours), I get tired, and when I do, I stop thinking in some way.  In this case, I stopped paying attention to the technical qualities of the images we were making, and I suspect that I wasn't doing a good job in setting direction.  When I become aware of myself doing things like this, that's my signal to put down the camera, thank the model, pay the model, and start cleaning up.

I don't know whether models get tired like this, too, but I assume that they do.  However, experienced models are usually much younger than I and therefore have much more stamina, and inexperienced models are often so excited by the novelty of their experience that they can go for hours & hours.  So, I'm usually the limiting factor.

In any case, Tiana was ready to go on, but she wore me out.

Okay -- that's my story.  By the time Tiana & I tried to make images here in the dining room, I just wasn't at the top of my game, so we didn't try for long.  We called it a day, I paid her, and I cleaned up a bit, putting away the electronic equipment, but frankly I was too tired to move the furniture around & put everything away -- I could do that after sending Tiana off to her second sitting here in town.

Tiana was amazing -- she would get my highest recommendation.
