I've
often said that I really don't know what a model looks like
until I've photographed her. But I knew that Jolie had a
lush & curvy figure, and I wanted to see what she looked
like when lit from above. So, we suspend a medium sized
soft box on a boom arm directly above her. This is what
you get. |
I
like including that empty space above Jolie. It puts her
lovely face in the center of the image, and I think the image
proportions emphasize the curved jog in her pose. Sure,
you'll see that most of these images are filled with Jolie's
figure, but I do like this particular composition a lot. |

I
like how the directional light brings out the textures in the
background & in the blanket beneath Jolie.
This light
can be tricky, however. The model needs to
"cheat" her face up a tad -- otherwise, her face can
be in shadow. Remember: the model can't tell what
the light looks like; it is the job of the photographer to give
the model feedback & direction. |
It's
funny. I have tall ceilings on this floor -- roughly 9½
feet tall. The soft box does hang below the ceiling by
quite a bit, but there is still enough height to allow Jolie to
get up on her knees like this. If we had a conventional
ceiling (8 feet tall), I doubt that we'd be able to produce
images like this.
(My
dream studio has 20 foot ceilings.)

A
near miss -- I don't like "what the heck is she looking
at" pictures, but I like the light & the smoothness of
her skin. Also, there is a fill light illuminating her
face nicely.
If only there
was eye-contact! |
