Sitting done December 6, 2004

In general, I'd like to create nude images that are semi-timeless.  By that I mean that one couldn't exactly date when the image was made.  Some images have more date clues than others.  Certainly, clothing fashion is typically a giveaway.  Other things that can give away dates -- furniture, hair style, makeup, cars, cliché lighting styles, and other props.  So, these past pictures of Jessica, with her low cut jeans, are contemporarily dated -- while I love women's abdomens, the style is fairly new.

So, I neutralize the background with my canvas backdrop, and I ask Jessica to pose nude, without the jeans.  This allows us to play with different lighting schemes, which I want to demonstrate for Jessica before her sitting with Leona.

I do notice that as I get older, my sittings get less energetic, and models often take their cues from the photographer.  Hence, the Mona Lisa smile technique that started with Kira's sitting and put into action with Lindsay's sitting.  Remember -- both these sittings were less than two weeks before Jessica's -- these ideas were fresh on my mind.  I can be tired later -- for the sitting, I wanted to jump around myself.

I didn't remember whether Jessica & I did any horizontal work in our first sitting, so I invite Jessica to the floor.  Her feet must have been hurting from the Jump! images.

I strive to keep my camera lower than Jessica's head -- like the King of Siam in The King And I.

Comfort is very important to me, especially during a sitting.  But by "comfort", I mean that the model should feel safe & respected throughout the sitting.  Physical comfort is of secondary importance.  Hence, I don't have problems asking models to jump around on hardwood floors in bare feet or to twist around & flex or to hang upside down or whatever.

But if I recall, I was having some difficulty with my hot water heater at this time, and the hot water is what powers the room heat.  Despite having a little electric heater, the room was a bit chilly.  So, we took a break with the blanket, which looks great on Jessica.

There is a problem with me photographing Jessica -- I wind up liking a lot of the images we make together, and therefore I wind up posting a lot.  Sure, there are some special images, but to me, even the "average" images are somewhat special.  This was true for our first sitting, and it's true now.

Hope you don't mind.

What is it about messy hair that makes a woman sexy?

I make some slight adjustments to the lighting, setting up a favorite of mine -- two soft boxes on either side of the model, creating a bit of shadow.  We make a few more exposures, on the floor & standing.

Here's a token color (digital) image from this lighting setup.

I've got to admit that I used this lighting setup a lot during Jessica's first sitting, so I didn't want to overuse it here.  Remember, I'm demonstrating various lighting effects for Jessica, so that she can choose a few for her sitting with Leona.

But I've got to admit that I like this one quite a bit.  I love how the soft light around the edges of her figure help separate her from the dark background, and I like how Jessica's wonderful skin tone is recorded.  It looks like Jessica is glowing!

Much as I like that final light, I force myself to move away from it.  One final lighting setup, and we are done.

This sitting concludes on the next page:  Light From Above
