Sitting occurred on August 2, 2004

Way back when Jessica visited during last December's holiday season, we finished that sitting in the shower.  I visit that shower every day, but photographically speaking, I haven't been back in there since then.  It's a difficult place to work logistically:

  • Even though the shower is much larger than average, the quarters are cramped.

  • The photographic equipment, if it gets wet, can be damaged, or worse explode.

  • It's difficult to position the lighting equipment -- there's not enough space to walk around the lights, so your only option is to position it from in front of it, which is awkward.

  • I need to work with the wide angle lens, and the film camera's wide angle lens isn't quite wide enough.

So, this last setup was done exclusively with the digital camera.  When I worked with Jessica, the digital camera was new, and I really didn't know how to use it.  Also, at that time, I hadn't decided to "colorize" the images.

We pretty much have to put the model into a corner, which limits the lighting options.  For these pictures, we use a single light source with the large softbox & let the light bounce off the walls for fill light.  This works well.

I like the crouching-type poses here.  Somehow, it looks like Brooke has been captured -- an exciting concept, I think.  I also like the wide angle distortion -- it's no so pronounced as to be distracting, but it makes things interesting.  Also, I note that I've included Brooke's feet in the photo -- I am well aware that I usually crop the model's feet out of the image.  Somehow, it makes these images feel even more nude than the others -- there is no doubt, everything is uncovered.  So, here's to the feet fans.

The digital camera is set at its widest angle here, and it shows, but the distortion isn't so back.  For a change, it's nice to be working close to the model -- she is perhaps a yard away.  I like how her foot anchors the bottom left corner of this image.

Happy accident.

Well, perhaps "accident" is a little strong, after all, I negotiated with the model, got her here, had the equipment, had the lighting, set everything up, was open to what was happening, and was there at the right time.  During the secret gallery portion of Leilani & Madison's recent visit, I had a similar "accident".  I like it -- I like the informality of it all.  It's nice.  Maybe I'll try to do it on purpose, but I'm not sure it'll be as magical.

Unlike the Jessica setup, we decide to get Brooke wet, and I am glad we did.

Throughout this setup, the digital camera is hand-held.  If I was to use the film camera, I would have wanted to put it on a tripod, but I suppose I could hand-hold it, too.  Regardless, the digital camera is light & easy to handle, and I take advantage of it to try different angles, like looking at Brooke from above, here.

Well, we got wet, we next tried some baby oil.  While I'll admit that the results were a bit more "glamorous" than my normal images, I'm glad we did this.

Given the constraints of working in the shower, I think we did well.

Sitting Assessment:  Given that I was unprepared for Brooke's arrival, I think we did a real good job here.  Things I learned during this sitting:

  • I could do more with different angles, positioning the camera above or below the model.

  • Wide angle images are interesting.

  • I liked the pictures of Brooke on her belly -- I love the curve of the small of her back.

  • The images where Brooke is nude but all the "naughty bits" are not showing are exciting.

  • The digital images require precise exposure -- there isn't a lot of latitude in the digital exposures.

  • I can think of all sorts of ideas for working in the shower.

What do you think?
