When Victoria A. recently visited me, we had a great deal of fun during her Shirt Dance photographs, and I decided to expand on the concept a bit with Ashton.

I don't like to go back to past themes & setups unless I can make significant improvements, but this setup is too much fun.  Ashton's hair is longer & thicker than Victoria's, and she moved differently, too.  That & we used more shadowy / moody lighting made this setup very interesting.

Ashton is nearly six feet tall, and she has long hair.  We realized immediately that we had to use wide angle lenses and that we had to take down the backdrop, since it simply didn't cover enough space.  Ashton is athletic & she is able to whip her hair with great energy.  The result is some fantastic images.

We start with digital images, and these proved to be a challenge.  The digital camera can hesitate before the shutter releases (to calculate exposure, even though I have it set on "manual" and to auto-focus).  Now, if I depress the shutter release button halfway, I can get the camera to a ready state, and when I depress the button the rest of the way, the shutter releases.  But the bottom line is that I can't be totally precise on when the shutter goes off.  This image here is an example of the shutter being released early in Ashton's hair flip action.

I think these images are wonderful.  I can't explain how Ashton's thighs, towards the bottom of the image, appear to be fuzzy, but it adds to the sense of movement in the image.

We made a lot of exposures with the digital camera before we move on to the film camera.  With the film camera, I have more precise control of the shutter, and somehow the resulting images appear sharper to me.  That could be because the film camera syncs with the flash at 1/500th of a second while the digital camera syncs at 1/250th.

This image & the one below are favorites from this setup.

Personally, I could make images like this all day, but by now, Ashton was getting a little dizzy.  She has a lot of hair, and it takes quite a bit of energy to get it moving like this.  I'm really glad we used shadowy lighting -- it loaned depth to the images & made interesting contrasts with the background.  I had to stand back a bit, to give Ashton room, but I wound up cropping some of these images closer.

A large part of the appeal of these images is that I have to relinquish control to the vagaries of fate.
