Here's something you don't see everyday:

Moving Down Columbia Avenue

I live in downtown Portland, in an old Victorian house built in 1890.  Over the years, the city has grown to engulf my house, and there are few buildings in down that are older than mine.  This is one -- it's the Ladd Carriage House, and it's on the historic register.  A new 30 story building is scheduled to be erected right next door to this house, so in order to protect it, the house is being moved five short blocks to a parking lot during construction.  When construction is completed, the house will move back.

So, here's the Carriage House being moved, about halfway between its old home & its temporary home.  It's not a small house -- it's three stories plus an attic tall.  And it's wide.  Columbia Avenue is two lanes of traffic plus two lanes of parking, and the house is slightly wider than that.  All the traffic & street lights have been removed -- still, it's a challenge to maneuver it around the tree lined street.

No picture can do this justice -- it's absolutely freaky to see the house roll slooooowly down the street.

It looks interesting with my typical "sepia" toning, too:
